What is a birth chart?

In astrology, a birth chart is a diagram of celestial positions for a particular birth date, time and location. Astrologers interpret it as a symbolic framework, not a scientifically established prediction of personality or destiny.

Planets, signs and houses

Astrological tradition assigns planets symbolic themes: the Sun is associated with identity, the Moon with emotional life, and Mercury with communication. Signs describe a style of expression; houses represent areas of life. These meanings are conventions within astrology, not proven physical influences.

Sun, Moon and rising

Your Sun sign is only one chart placement. The Moon sign and ascendant (rising sign) add other perspectives in an astrological interpretation. The ascendant and house positions depend on the birth time and location, so an uncertain birth time can make those parts less reliable.

Aspects connect the chart

Aspects are angular relationships between chart positions. Astrologers often discuss conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines and sextiles. Read each interpretation alongside the whole chart rather than treating one aspect as a verdict about your life.

Preparing your details

Use your full birth date, recorded local birth time, place and the timezone applicable at birth. Daylight saving and historical offsets matter. If you do not know your birth time, say so rather than inventing one. Cosmolian members can save birth details and explore their chart with an AI advisor.
